Remarks

According to letter from Stanley Kemp, a friend and co-worker of Thomson at Grip Ltd., 21 November 1934, “The picture is not his preliminary sketch, but a later painting from the sketch. It depicts a marsh or swamp on the edge of lake skugog (or scugog) [sic] with evening settling down.” Thomson gave Kemp the sketch in the fall of 1913, as far as Kemp could recall, on a visit to Thomson’s studio upstairs on the south side of Isabella Street in Toronto.
