Remarks

A letter from T.W. Dwight, Professor of Forestry, University of Toronto, to Martin Baldwin, Director of the then Art Gallery of Toronto, 14 January 1955, contains a photograph of a red pine tree at Achray on Grand Lake which Thomson may have painted in this sketch (repr. Murray 1986a, 62). Dwight was convinced that the tree was the one Thomson had used as a model for The West Wind.
