HML refers to Harold Mortimer-Lamb, an early defender of the Group of Seven, mining engineer and collector. Possibly Dr. MacCallum considered this work as a possible purchase by Mortimer-Lamb or perhaps Mortimer-Lamb purchased it for a period of time before re-selling it to MacCallum; hence the inscription.
